Healthy aging is not completely reliant on improving muscular strength and endurance but rather on slowing the natural loss of muscular fitness. Muscular fitness is the single most crucial factor for maintaining functional independence and preventing chronic disease in an aging population. Sarcopenia, the natural loss of muscle mass accompanied by a decline in bone mass with aging, is a contributing factor to various diseases and overall functional disability. In this educational lecture, the latest research (including current work by Janot and colleagues) will elucidate evidence to support resistance training in older adults using various training modalities and exercise prescription principles.
